About the Dutchess County Agricultural Society Scholarship & Youth Empo

Founded in 2008 as a philanthropic extension of the Dutchess County Agricultural Society, our Scholarship & Youth Empo (Empowerment Program) exists to foster educational achievement and agricultural literacy among local youth. We believe that investing in young people ensures a sustainable and innovative future for farming, food security, and rural communities.

Our Mission

To provide financial assistance, mentorship, and hands-on exposure that removes barriers for students pursuing agriculture-related careers while celebrating the rich agricultural heritage of Dutchess County.

History & Impact

Since 2010, the Society has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students, and trade school attendees. The Youth Empo started in 2015 as a one-day workshop and has grown into a three-day immersive event attracting speakers from Cornell Cooperative Extension, local dairies, organic farms, and ag-tech startups. Each year, we partner with the Dutchess County Fair to offer behind-the-scenes access and career discovery.

Our Leadership

The Youth Committee consists of board members, local educators, and agricultural professionals who review scholarship applications, plan the Empo summit, and ensure funds are distributed equitably. We are an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit — all donations directly benefit youth programs.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

Applications open annually on January 15th and close April 30th. Eligibility: Dutchess County resident, minimum 2.8 GPA, and enrollment in an accredited college/trade school in a field related to agriculture, natural resources, or food systems. Check our website in January for the application form or email us to be added to our notification list.
